Sea kayaking (‘kayak’ meaning ‘man’s boat’) is the oldest form of ‘canoeing/kayaking’. It was invented by the Inuits over 4,000 years ago and this light boat was originally used for hunting in the Arctic.
There are three main types of models: the ‘baidarka’ from Alaska, the ‘quajaq’ from Western Greenland and the ‘quajaq’ from Eastern Greenland. Built from light wood and sealskin, these kayaks were made to measure.
They are used across the world for fishing and hunting, as well as by the armed forces. Kayaks were little developed until the eighties when their popularity rose in clubs.
It is large in size providing watertight compartments for the paddler- perfect for heading off for a few days.
Having become more and more popular over the last ten years for marathons, Kayaks are becoming lighter and more technical so as to increase speed.
